Yara Jimmink (Dutch, b. 1990) is a social documentary photographer based in Amsterdam. She graduated (BA) at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague in 2020, in the direction of documentary, storytelling photography. Her Moluccan-Dutch background has triggered her interest in exploring her roots and the connection between her grandparents’ native soil; the Moluccas and her own birthplace; the Netherlands. The connection was caused by decades of colonization, resulting in, herself, a colonial product. She tries to get a broader understanding of the themes she examines within her work as an artist; migration, oppression, rooting, deracination, what is home. It gives her the opportunity to develop her abilities in how to investigate this through communities and to expand her understanding of historical and cultural analogies. She focuses on how and what colonization has left its mark on our present and how the past and present will always be intertwined.
