About
Jim Joel is a Kampala-based photographer, researcher, archivist, and heritage storyteller exploring the relationships between photography, architecture, memory, and place. Combining visual documentation, archival research, and walking, his practice investigates how cities preserve, transform, and forget their histories.
He is the founder and curator of Page 4: A Cinema Archive, an ongoing initiative documenting the architectural and social histories of over 100 cinema spaces across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania through photographs, newspaper records, and oral histories.
Joel has collaborated with cultural and heritage organizations on publications, exhibitions, and research documenting Uganda’s architectural history. Using the photographic image as both a record and a method of inquiry, his work positions the archive as a living space where memory, place, and public history intersect.
