One of the most important objects of my childhood is a photographic album from the war in Guinea-Bissau (1963-74) that belongs to my father. That album constitutes what we might call a vernacular archive, an informal collection of pictures, a piece of memorabilia, a photographic assemblage of a past that has been a constant presence in my life. 


Let’s say that those images have been a tangible zone of contact between the present and the past that I’ve been inquiring again and again over the years in many different ways. How is the past, present? Over the years, I became increasingly puzzled about the situations behind those images. Sets of events that for a long time I grasped in aphasic fragments and could only articulate through pieces of testimonies and the intensity of complex silences. Overall, this is a piece about the zones of silence within and around those images, their thick shadows, dangerous interstices and violent affects.

Daniel Barroca (1976, PT) is an artist and an anthropologist who works in multimedia and transdisciplinary formats. He studied painting and visual arts at Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual (ArCo), Lisbon, earned a degree in visual arts from Escola Superior de Arte e Design (ESAD), Caldas da Rainha in 2001, and is currently doing a PhD in anthropology at the University of Florida. He has completed residencies at Spanish Academy, Rome, (2003-2004); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2007); QBox Gallery Residency Program, Athens (2009); Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam (2010-2011); Home Workspace Program, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2013-2014); Open Sessions, The Drawing Center, New York (2014-2015); and IIArtes, Universidad de Costa Rica (2017). Barroca has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Latin Union Prize for the Young Creation in Visual Arts (2003), the Bolsa João Hogan, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian grant (2007-2008, 2010-2011), the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian scholarship (2011), the Fondación Botin research grant (2014-2015), and the Fulbright PhD scholarship (2016-…).
