SOL IZQUIERDO

Postdoctoral Researcher and Curator, Technical University Berlin

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Sol Izquierdo de la Viña is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Chair for Modern Art History of the Technische Universität Berlin, where she is teaching and conducting research. Her current research project is entitled “Travelling Identity: Orientalist Imaginaries of Lene Schneider-Kainer through her Journeys during the Weimar Republic and in Exile” and recovers Schneider-Kainer’s work and trajectory, investigating ambivalences and reflecting on problems related to her legacy. As a Predoctoral Fellow (2017-2021) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, she carried out research stays in India and Germany, and completed a PhD in Art History awarded with the Enrique Fuentes Quintana-Prize from the Funcas Foundation (Category of Humanities 2020-2021). Her PhD revisited German Expressionism from critical transcultural and postcolonial perspectives, by examining Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s reception of Indian art and tracing cultural entanglements between the artistic movements of Dresden and Kolkata. She holds a Master of Art History in the Global Context from the Freie Universität Berlin, was a curatorial assistant at the independent art space SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin and, more recently, she has been guest co-curator at the Brücke-Museum Berlin for the exhibition “Whose Expression? The Brücke Artists and Colonialism”.

Research Interests

Her research interests include German visual and material cultures (20th and 21st Centuries). Transcultural art history. Critical museum studies, provenance research, curatorial and archive studies. Postcolonial studies and decolonial practices. Feminism and gender studies.
