Research interests:
Caroline Fucci is a researcher, curator and educator. Her research interests lie in the areas of exhibition histories, curatorial studies and practices, contemporary art and globalisation, aesthetics, and art and culture in the post-1989 context, with a focus on Brazil. Her PhD project, funded by the AHRC Midlands4Cities, centres on the biennial model and the representation of contemporary Brazilian art within key international biennials between the 1990s and 2010s. She explores the entanglements between the histories of exhibitions and art history, arguing that the biennial’s multiple temporal and spatial frameworks produce history and knowledge about contemporary art. Her project is heavily informed by archival practices, whereby she proposes a reading of the archive grounded in non-linear notions of storytelling and forms of historical narration. Since starting her PhD in 2022, she has received several grants to undertake research in the archival collections of the studied biennials, such as São Paulo, Venice, and Liverpool. She has presented her research at national and international conferences. In June 2024, she co-convened the AHRC-funded symposium “Identity Complex: Identity representation within global exhibition-making” at Bonington Gallery, Nottingham. She regularly contributes to independent arts education platforms by delivering talks and lectures on the biennial phenomenon and contemporary art theory and practice at galleries and art centres. Caroline also offers guided visits to exhibitions, museums, and art fairs both in the UK and abroad, and publishes monthly exhibition reviews.
